Girish Kuber, the executive editor of the Marathi newspaper Loksatta, writes that the younger Mr. Thackeray is now the presumptive rising star of the state and the city. Like his uncle, he has given voice to the aspirations of young Maharashtrians who feel that their city and state is being swamped by immigrants from other parts of India, though he has avoided being seen as anti-Muslim as the Shiv Sena has been.

In a long interview with The Indian Express published on Sunday, Mr. Thackeray put other politicians and parties on notice that he would take on anybody and everybody who does not meet his exacting standards. “Whichever party does not work for the people is my enemy,” he said. At least so far, the approach seems to have been a winning strategy for Mr. Thackeray.
